Classical Journey Tuesday 13 December

In the Phonic FM studio
Hilary Boxer gives us another perfect 5 - on her 'cello
playing an Irish folk song: "Twisting the Rope"
Today's show was a natural progression from last week's programme of flute music with Ruth Avis (6th December). This week the guest in the Phonic FM studio was the founder of 'Tasty Music' - and Ruth's partner in the 'Festive Flute' duet - 'cellist Hilary Boxer. Hilary has featured on the 'Classical Journey' in various ways for over a year now. The very first post on this site is about Hilary, and her collaboration with 'cellist Jane Pirie in the first concert of last year's 'Tasty Music' series. The very first picture is of Hilary at Budleigh Salterton for a rehearsal of James Whitbourne's choral account of the life of Ann Frank, 'Annelies'. (details). The second picture (provided by Simon Keitch) was of the 'flame-haired siren' herself - Jane Pirie.

Finally - a red letter day for Phonic FM - Hilary came to the studio in person - and brought her 'cello!

Hilary joined us at 10.30 so, to get the most out of her visit, we had an early 'concert run-down' and a few tracks before she arrived. After the now-familiar theme of Hans Christian Lumbye's 'Champagne Galop' we managed to squeeze in:

'Air a l'Italienne' from Georg Philipp Telemann's Recorder Suite in A minor
(Capella Istropolitana & soloist Jiri Stivín)

'Fantasia' from Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No 3 in A minor
(Solo pianist Alexandra Dariescu)

'La Jota Aragonese': Camille Saint-Saëns' Opus 64
(London Philharmonic Orchestra)

'Jota' from Manuel de Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole
(Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & soloists Jacqueline du Pré, 'cello and John Williams, guitar)

'Shine On' from Andrew Daldorph's Seven Joys Carol Collection
(East Devon Choral Society, conductor Andrew Daldorph)
- to be included with Joseph Haydn's 'St Nicholas Mass'
in the EDCS concert this Saturday (17th Dec)

'Lento & Allegro Molto' from Edward Elgar's 'Cello Concerto in E minor
(London Philharmonic Orchestra & soloist Robert Cohen)

Once Hilary arrived in the studio we heard a wonderful selection of pieces from her 'Tasty Music' series:

'Spanish Dance' by Enrique Granados from 'Sounds of Spain'
('Cello + Guitar: Hilary Boxer and David Cottam)

'Bachianas Brazileiras' by Heitor Villa-Lobos from 'Sounds of Spain'
(no announcement - top marks if you recognised it!)

"Rigs and Jeels" - a selection of traditional Scottish Dances
('Cello + 'Cello: Hilary Boxer and Jane Pirie)

'Andante' from Johann Sebastian Bach's Gamba Sonata
('Cello + Piano: Hilary Boxer and Susan Steele)

'Allegro non troppo & Adagio' from Heitor Villa-Lobos' Assobio a Játo (The Jet Whistle)
('Cello + Flute: Hilary Boxer and Ruth Avis)

'Twisting of the Rope' & 'Josefin's Waltz': Irish and Swedish traditional music
(Hilary Boxer playing live 'cello in the Phonic FM studio - see main picture)

'Petit Duo No 2 in D Major' from Franz Danzi's Kammermusik mit Flöte
('Cello + Flute: Hilary Boxer and Ruth Avis)

'Nocturne No 2' from Johann Freidrich Franz Bergmüller's Trois Nocturnes pour Violon et Guitare
(From the CD 'Nocturne' - 'Cello & Guitar: Hilary Boxer and David Cottam)

What a delightful morning's conversation that was. Hilary works so hard, has so much to talk about, and has produced so much gorgeous music. During our talk we heard about various projects in development.
Very incomplete details below:

The CD 'Nocturne' featuring Hilary Boxer and David Cottam is available to buy - contact Tasty Music
