Exeter Music Group invites singers to take part in Gustav Mahler's 'Symphony of a Thousand'

Press release                                                                                            7 December 2011

Exeter’s EMG Symphony Orchestra seeks singers for performance of ‘Symphony of a Thousand’

The South West's biggest amateur symphony orchestra is planning the biggest performance in its 44-year history and the first ever performance in the South West of Mahler's 'Symphony of a Thousand'.

The monumental Symphony No 8 was given this nickname because of the number of performers at its world première in Munich in 1910.

102 years later, EMG Symphony Orchestra will be gathering an orchestra of over 100, eight vocal soloists and a massive choir. EMG will be recruiting singers from both the local area and around the country. For many this rare performance will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The training of the choir will happen over three weekends in May, July and September 2012, with the final rehearsals and concert taking place on the weekend of 15 & 16 September. The venue will be Exeter University's Great Hall, and the whole performance will be masterminded by EMG's Musical Director Marion Wood.

Marion has been involved in the piece before, when she trained the Belfast Philharmonic Choir for a performance for the Millennium celebrations, and she is eager to use her experience to help create EMG's performance for Exeter in 2012.  As a professional conductor and choir trainer, Marion is perfectly placed to bring the whole enormous show together.

Singers will need some choral experience to cope with the demands of this fabulous work, but Marion has a long track record of successfully steering amateur musicians through the most complex repertoire. Any singers in interested in joining the choir for this massive undertaking are warmly invited to email the choir co-ordinator, Carol Galton, by email at  cgalton@gmail.com or telephoning (01392) 410660.
