I'm writing to you as a 'Friend' of the 1769 Powderham Organ Restoration Fund, with news of our next concert. Bach's Jesu meine Freude is probably the most popular of his six motets, but Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri is much less familiar. It's a breathtakingly beautiful work, seven short cantatas, each focusing on a part of the body of the crucified Christ – feet, knees, hands, side, chest, heart, and finally the face. It's astonishingly intense, not at all what you might expect from a North German Lutheran composer, and I've gathered together five superb voices, with two violins, cello and continuo harpsichord and organ from Devon's fine professional team, Divertimento.
As a 'Friend', you have priority booking, from Monday next, 16th February until Friday 24th.
Also, in a bid to encourage our future audiences, the Trustees are making 20 tickets available free to young people under the age of 16, when accompanied by a responsible adult. These can be claimed until Friday 24th February, on a 'first come, first served' basis.
I strongly recommend that you book as soon as you can, before tickets are offered to the wider public from Monday 27th February. As you may be aware, several people were disappointed when tickets sold out for our last concert.
And finally, a reminder of the rest of this year's programme and dates:
Friday 18th May 2012  - The St. Nicholas Consort
Soprano, oboe, recorder, harpsichord and organ
'A Baroque medley of Music to include works by J.S.Bach, Handel, and William Chapple of Ashburton.'
Friday 26th October 2012  - Colin Jackson, ‘cello; George Pratt, organ/harpsichord
A programme of music mainly by Bach, and including two of the Suites for unaccompanied ‘cello. One movement is flawed in the copying by Bach’s wife, Anna Magdalena, and we shall be offering a solution to the resulting problem—a ‘world first’!

Friday 14th December 2012  - Handel’s Messiah
as it might have been performed in a domestic setting such as the James Wyatt Music Room at Powderham Castle

George Pratt – Kapellmeister
