We’re particularly pleased to welcome the St. Nicholas Consort. It is directed by Dr. Christopher Kent who was the first person to recognise the importance of the 1769 Brice Seede organ in the Castle. He examined it and wrote a learned article about many details of its history and construction in 1993. This in turn played a major part in inspiring the whole restoration project.
The Consort’s programme is delightfully diverse, part serious, part light-hearted (ideal, too, for giving younger listeners a wide variety of Baroque flavours):
Songs by Purcell, Handel, Croft and Stanley
Cello music by Bach, Hummel and de Fesch
Oboe sonatas by Babel and Vincent and
Organ music by Bach, Kerll and Sweelinck.
The programme ends with ‘Yes and No’ by Samuel Chapple of Ashburton of whom a critic wrote about a century ago: ‘Chapple published several collections of anthems, which are written in a style now happily extinct’. We shall learn more on the night! Cello music by Bach, Hummel and de Fesch
