Classical Journey Tuesday 4 September 2012 Compagnie Giulia, David Sawyer, Rebecca Willson

Compagnie Giulia
Leicestershire Small Pipes: Julia Thomas
Darbuka: Howard Frey  Bouzouki: Nick Millington
This Tuesday's programme will feature live interviews from start to finish.

Seven talented Devon musicians will be in the studio to discuss their music and future events, with recordings of their work - and live performance in the studio - along the way.

First we shall have an hour with the incomparable Totnes mediaeval music group, 'Compagnie Giulia'. Julia Thomas, Howard Frey and Nick Millington will bring their instruments to perform mediaeval music. They will be joined by Marc Walpot on violin.

They will discuss the life of a great Devon musician, the Turkish saz and oud player Simon Cassell, who was a member of Compagnie Giulia until his untimely death in a road traffic collision last year.

Simon was also a member of the Bulgarian Klezmer Group 'Shavali' with Marc Walpot.

Also in the studio will be another saz and oud player, Russell Harris. Simon sang and played with Russell in the Turkish music group, Bazigah.

Find out more about Simon Cassell, and his musical career in the post below.

In addition to mediaeval music by Compagnie Giulia, we will also hear:

music by Shivali - 'Ганкино хоро' (Ganka's Dance) - a complex dance from Northern Bulgaria featuring a sousaphone solo by Ruth Zimmermann, accompanied on darbuka by Simon Cassell

music by Bazigah - 'Civanim Gel' (Come, Civanim) - a haunting Turkish song, vocals by Simon Cassell, with saz/oud accompaniment.

David Sawyer
demonstrated the acoustic 'sanzakord'
to Soundart presenter Chris Booth
At 11am we will be joined by a somewhat different musician, an Exeter man - David Sawyer. (Apologies to David - this post formally said he is from Totnes. Not so, but he does play various instruments with Sam Richards' Totnes Improvisers Orchestra.)

David will bring a very special instrument that he has invented himself - the 'elektrokord' - and give us a demonstration. The elektrokord has clamped metal keys like a Zimbabwean 'Mbira Dzavadzimu' (voice of the ancestors) - known as 'Sanza' in the seventies when David was developing the instrument. The acoustic version he calls the 'sanzakord'. The elektrokord can be connected to an amplifier to put its volume on a par with the electric guitar and drums of  his band members in the 'Chill Acoustic'.

David and his elektrokord will be in concert with 'The Chill Acoustic' at the Redearth Gallery in Bickleigh on Friday evening
- at the opening of a new exhibition of art dedicated to the memory of Crediton artist Daphne Cartwright - including works by Daphne and her husband Paul, and also David and his wife Christine.

We can see Daphne's work on her website.

Crediton Arts Centre website has details of a celebration of Daphne's life at Sandford Village Hall on Saturday 13 October - see page 6.

In the afternoon of  Friday 24th August (a busy day in Totnes) David was with Sam Richards' 'Totnes Improvisers Orchestra' at St Mary's Church, Totnes, for a rehearsal of their one-hour performance piece, 'Vox Populi' which was also performed, and transmitted live, from the Soundart Radio studio at Dartington Hall at 6pm that evening.

In an unprecedented disaster, all the photos from the church were lost - but we do have a photos of the Soundart broadcast:

That really was an amazing concert - watch the Soundart schedules for a repeat broadcast - or send in a request.

There is a short recording of David playing that acoustic elektrokord at St Mary's church on Facebook - link to Facebook.

Pianist Rebecca Willson
- Dartington Music Graduate
Tuesday's 'Classical Journey' will end with something equally exciting

Rebecca Willson will join us at 11.30 to tell us about more new music - at the next 'Nonclassical' event, which will be at the Bikeshed Theatre on Sunday 23rd September.

In addition to Rebecca herself (viola), Michael Brailey (violin), Hannah Willson ('cello), Ruth Molins (Flute) and Peter Nickol (piano) there will also be a special guest at the Bikeshed on 23 September - the founder of Nonclassical, Gabriel Prokofiev!

Rebecca will probably also want to tell us about a very different musical venture she's involved in - Western Swing and Hillbilly Jazz with the 'Zazou Cowboys'. Chris Wilkinson's line up of double bass, lead guitar, slide guitar - and Rebecca's violin! They will be in concert at the North Bridge Inn in Exeter, just two days before 'Nonclassical', on Friday 21st September.

We can hear some of Rebecca's modern piano repertoire on the programme:

Rolf Hind: 'Solgata' for prepared piano (1999)

Jonathan Harvey: 'Tombeau de Messiaen' for piano and audio tape (1994)

That should keep us going for a couple of hours!

Tuesday's journey starts at 10am.

Please tune in!
