Bach’s ‘great Passion’

J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion is to be performed by the Exeter Bach Society Choir and Orchestra and conducted by David Davies, Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral, at The Mint Church, Exeter, at 7pm on Saturday 16 March. This concert, which has a double choir and orchestra, is supported by Gilbert Stephens Solicitors and The Exeter Arts Council.

One of the only two remaining Passions written by Bach, the ‘great Passion’, as it was known in Bach’s family, is one of the supreme works of Western civilisation, appealing to people of all faiths as well as those of none.  Bach’s biographer Malcolm Boyd quotes Hubert Parry’s description of the Passion as “the richest and noblest example of devotional music in existence”, then adding: “but it is not given only to believers to be moved by it.  Bach’s supreme achievement is also a work of profound humanity”.

The Passion according to St Matthew is told by the Evangelist, to be sung by well-known tenor Richard Rowntree, a leading oratorio and consort singer, with Julian Rippon, a well-known local soloist, as Jesus. Other soloists are from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

As a recording artist, Richard has sung on numerous recordings for labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Hyperion, Chandos, Naxos and Regent and has also broadcast regularly, both as a soloist and as a consort member, on BBC TV, BBC Radio 3 and 4, Radio France, WDR Germany and Classic FM.  Future engagements in 2013 include an appearance at the BBC Proms with OAE, and tours with The Gabrieli Consort, English Concert, Choir of the Age of Enlightenment and The Australian Chamber Orchestra, with whom he will appear as a soloist at venues including Sydney Opera House in December 2013.
