INTERVIEWS AND NEWS

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra - Project Manager Linda Higson
Tuesday's programme will open with Romantic music this week. The opening Allegro con Molto from Antonin Dvořák's Eighth Symphony. Listen out for the pastoral theme from the flutes in the first minute - leading to a single sustained flute note with string and tympani accompaniment. What an opening! As the full orchestra bends to the task that little theme returns in the background, eventually being taken up by that fabulous instrument, the cor anglais.

Many other instruments get their chance to shine, clarinets, bassoons, oboes, even the diminutive but strident piccolo, not to mention 'cellos, trumpets, French horns. Rusty (and not so rusty) musicians might listen and think, "If only I'd kept up the practising, that could be me". Well, now it can!

Following 16 years of 'Rusty Musicians' community music days, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is coming to Devon for 'Dvořák in a Day' at West Exe School in Exeter on Saturday 23 February. Conductor Kevin Smith will hold workshops from 10am until 5pm, followed by an informal concert performance for family and friends - alongside the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

There will be further details on the Classical Journey nearer the time, of course. In the meantime, the BSO Project Manager, Linda Higson, will join us after the Allegro Con Brio, at 10.15am, to tell us all about this very exciting and unique opportunity. Anyone of reasonable standard (Grade V or above) can have the chance to play with a professional orchestra. Applications are invited now. (See details below.)

Anthos Arts - Artistic Adviser (& Arts Awards Adviser) Emma-Rose Payne
At 11.15am we will be joined by another guest with a similar project to discuss. Emma-Rose Payne of Anthos Arts theatre project will be talking about an opportunity for young aspiring actors. Emma will discuss their new production 'Wings in the Way'. Rehearsals will be every Saturday, from February onwards. Anyone from 14 to 16 years old can join in and develop their acting skills. There will also be opportunities to learn directing and technical skills.

Applications are invited from Wednesday 15 January to Saturday 25 January. Contact Emma-Rose by email: anthos-arts@outlook.com.

'Wings in the Way' is only a working title. The completed work will be the combined creation of everyone involved. A great way to learn about the theatre from the ground up. Membership is free and, for a small fee, members can enter for Nationally accredited Arts Awards. Emma-Rose will be able to tell us all we need to know about the scheme and how to get involved.

More Exciting Opportunities in 2014

Exeter University Theatre Company
There will be a lot more to think about on Tuesday's programme. Exeter University Theatre Company (EUTCo) are currently in rehearsal for Tracy Letts' 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning play "August: Osage County". The play is on at the Northcott Theatre from Wednesday 5 February until Saturday 8 February.

There will be a chance on the evening of Wednesday 29 January to join a script reading at the University. (Technically, this is for over 50s only - but it's hard to imagine younger people would be excluded!) "The Play's the Thing"

Dan McNiell co-directed last year's EUTCo  production with Harry Kingscott. The perfromance run was in the University Music and Drama (M&D) Room in March. Dan and Harry joined us in the Phonic FM studio for a very special 'Mighty Book' with Gill Hopkins and Abigail Marlow to discuss Anthony Burgess's novel, Stanley Kubrick's screen production, and Burgess's stage version of 'A Clockwork Orange".

Dan thoroughly recommends taking on the Directing challenge. Applications for this terms production in the M&D Room closed last Friday. Proposals were discussed on Sunday. Watch this space for developments. Anyone interested in proposing future EUTCo productions can still contact the Artistic Directors, Sheena Drainer (sd342@ex.ac.uk) or Katie Goodsell (kg285@ex.ac.uk).

Young Musicians Platform Competition - Enter now!
Since the inauguration of the Two Moors Festival in 2001, Penny Adie has held a yearly competition for young people in Devon. The winners perform at a special concert during the Two Moors Festival. As the name implies, winning is a great platform for a young musician's skills. Many past winners are now well known to all. Morwenna del Mar and Tamsin Waley-Cohen won in the very first year. Other, now familiar, names include, Veronika Shoot, Tansy Bennett, Molly Lopresti Richards, Lucy Bray and - featuring on 'Classical Journey' on 22 October 2013 - Korean violin virtuoso Anna Im.

Applications are now invited for this year's competition. DEADLINE Friday 31 January! (The Application Form can be downloaded here.) Any musician (strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, piano, singer) can apply. Age limit is 18 on 1st January 2014. Applicants must be at school in the South West. Minimum standard Grade VII. Maximum number of places 60 - first come, first served! Auditions begin in March - and the winners will play in a special concert at this year's Two Moors Festival (16-25 October).

If anyone is able and willing to sing at the concert, or help a Society member learn the part, their President, Kit Fotheringham, would love to hear from you. email: caf212@exeter.ac.uk.

Rebecca Smith
John Scarfe - Farewell Concert Saturday 18 January
Over the years many delightful classical concerts have been organised at Broadclyst Parish Church by organist John Scarfe. John has appeared on Phonic FM several times, providing piano accompaniment for other musicians, notably baritone Gareth Keene, clarinettist Sally Kirby and soprano Mary O'Shea.

Sadly the time has come for John to leave the parish. On Saturday 18 January, John will host one last 'Coffee and Music' concert in the Church at 10.30am. He will be piano accompanist as always and will be joined by two 'Coffee and Music' regulars, Gareth Keene and mezzo-soprano Rebecca Smith.
